Here we go again!
Setup & Software
As the successor of the ASUS RT-AC68U this wireless router comes with the same features and more. The installation is equally easy. Simply plug it in and open the browser of your choice to begin the setup. If you used a previous model of the ASUS RT-AC-line then you can just restore your old settings. That’s hardly necessary though because the installation doesn’t take that much time to begin with.
The ASUS RT-AC87U also comes with the new AiProtection that is supposed to protect your whole home network against malware. Even if a virus somehow got into your network the router will automatically stop it from sending private information. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t install additional software to keep your data safe though.
Hardware & Wireless Connection
This is where the ASUS RT-AC87U really begins to shine. The router features the new 4-antenna, 4-stream design that further enhances the capabilities of the 5GHz band in terms of coverage. You also get two 1GHz dual-core processors which can handle just about anything you may want to do online.
This hardware allows the dual-bands to reach a maximum speed of 600Mbps on the 2.4GHz band and 1734Mbps on the 5GHz band for a total of 2334Mbps which is faster than any other dual-band router currently available.
This wireless router comes with one USB 2.0 and one USB 3.0 port. The former is placed on the backside as usual, the latter on the front. That you have four LAN ports attached to it goes without saying I guess.
As you would expect the coverage and speed are astounding. The ASUS RT-AC87U delivers even better results than the NETGEAR Nighthawk R8000 Tri-Band router in all the tests I’ve seen so far.
However, apart from the expert and magazine tests there are many users who complain about connection issues with the 5GHz frequency. In certain environments the range seems to be not as good as expected and in others the connection is not stable.
The ASUS RT-AC87U in comparison
|ASUS RT-AC87U||NETGEAR |
|Data Transfer Rate (max)||2334Mbps||3200Mbps (Tri-Band)||1900Mbps|
Let me be honest: I have yet to test this wireless router and can only tell you what I’ve read in users and experts reviews. On paper the ASUS RT-AC87U seems to really be the best wireless router currently available if money is not an issue and for many people it seems to be just that. The reason I will not buy it is mainly that I’m still very happy with the previous model and there are too many reports about a whole variety of issues online. I’m not willing to take that risk for more than 250$.
It might well be worth a look if you want to get great speed and coverage and don’t have a problem with going through the trouble of returning this router if it’s not working properly.
